Hello there friends! I have just gotten back from a family vacation and I’m ready to share a brand new recipe with you, Southern Skillet Shepherd’s Pie. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who doesn’t enjoy southern cooking and flavors. Make it a quick 30 minute meal, and you can put this Southern Skillet Shepherd’s Pie on the menu for dinner tonight!
Most of the ingredients I had on hand. I love easy no-fuss recipes!
First, chop up the potatoes and the half an onion.
Then, dump the potatoes into a pot and boil for about 15 minutes. At the same time, dump the beef, onion, garlic, and salt and pepper into a skillet and cook until the beef is no longer pink, about 10 minutes.
You can certainly cook the meat in a cast iron skillet from the beginning, however, I wanted the least amount of grease possible in the finished dish so I used a regular skillet.
When the potatoes are soft, drain the water and add the cream, butter, salt and pepper. You can use a hand-masher, but I love using my small, Kitchen-Aid handheld mixer for quick mashed potatoes.

When the meat is finished cooking, take the skillet off the heat and add the peas and carrots. Mix together.
Then, evenly layer it in the iron skillet.
Add the mashed potatoes on top in an even layer.
Broil for 2-3 minutes, just enough to brown the potatoes. Make sure to use the top rack in the oven and don’t take you eyes off it!
The finished dish is this delicious Southern Skillet Shepherd’s Pie that is sure to be a crowd pleaser!
